Be Your Own Boss: Escape The Daily Grind

Partnered Content.

You get out of bed, drag yourself into work, spend all day working hard to make other people rich, then you go home. Repeat. Does this sound like your day? Do you feel like the hardest working person in your office, but get little reward or recognition for your efforts? It could be time for a career change, and one that puts you into a business that runs as a meritocracy.

Below are three options for going it alone, and taking control of your earning potential. None are easy routes to take, but all can offer a very comfortable salary should you do well.

Recruitment

This is a sales job at heart, but with a twist. What you are ‘selling’ is people and their skills. In essence, your job is to be a ‘middleman’ between the company hiring (the client) and the person looking for work (the candidate). You take the time to understand the needs and wants of each; then you introduce the best matches. You will have to be able to network effectively to gain the business connections that will allow you to represent a number of clients. Many companies receive hundreds of applications for a single post. By offering your services, you can cut down on the legwork and endless perusal of resumes. It is not an easy job though. Unlike selling washing machines or cars, where you only need to convince the buyer to sign on the dotted line, you will need to convince both parties that this is the best option for both of them. As such, you need to be a good judge of character and be able to tell if your candidate is having doubts. The hours will be long, and the first few months will be tough while you build up a client base. But the potential income could be enormous.

Trading

You may not like the idea of working on a packed sales floor, shouting insults down the phone like in the movies. But there are other options to get a slice of the trading action. Many people are setting up on their own and to great success. There are even courses to help you learn how to do the job as well as software to help you do it better. Just reading through ally invest reviews will help you to understand how much the game has changed since Charlie Sheen wandered onto Wall Street. This is a job that will require extensive amounts of research and a good eye for numbers. Unlike recruitment though, you can only work during normal business hours, so no late nights chasing business opportunities and candidates.

House Renovation

If you’re a little more practical and have a trade skill, you could look into house renovation. The simple premise is to buy a derelict or abandoned property for below market rate, invest some time and money to bring it up to standard, then sell it on for more than the cost of the property and renovation combined. It can be very easy to lose money on projects like these though, so you’ll need to be good at sticking to a budget and finding ways of saving money. But there is potential to make tens of thousands in profit for a few months work.

As previously mentioned, none of these options are going to be easy money, but if you are the kind of person who is willing to work hard to earn their keep, then these careers could be a perfect fit for your work ethic.
