5 Reasons Your Business Needs A Social Media Program

By Molly Brown

Believe it or not, Facebook has been around since 2004 and Twitter since 2006. It seems like every couple months new types of social media are being created, but overall it is still a pretty new concept. A lot of businesses are on board with using social media; however, others are still skeptical about what’s in it for them.

Using sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram can have some surprising benefits. Maybe its time that we change our perspective on social media and dive right in instead of being overwhelmed by the unknown.

Here are 5 reasons you should think about using social media for your business:

  1. Branding – Usually when thinking of branding, people picture the logo or “looks” of a company, but when it comes to social media branding, it’s all about creating a online persona and maintaining a strong and consistent presence for your current and potential customers.

  2. Communication – These days most communication does not happen face-to-face or even over a phone call, and while e-mail is always a good option it is important to have other mediums to share information. Twitter and Facebook not only provide ways of messaging but also allow followers to interact with the organization through replying to or sharing posts.

  3. Spread the word – Regularly posting on social media is important but so is posting relevant information. Whether that’s contact information, or an article related to your business, if your followers find it interesting they are more likely to “like” or share it. If others hear from their friends about your company, they are more likely to seek further information–it can be a domino effect.

  4. Convenience– Social media is easily accessible. Anyone with Internet access is able to see what’s on social media. Wi-Fi is everywhere, even airplanes.

  5. It’s free – It takes little to no cost to create a social media account. Investing time at the beginning to learn how to use social media tools–and the time it takes to remain consistent and current–can pay off later. There are also great tools available to make it easier. Hootsuite is just one example of a program that allows you to schedule your social media posts so today you can write and schedule a post that will appear in your newsfeed tomorrow.

The next time you think, “I don’t know how to use social media so it would be a waste of time for my business.” Take a second to step back and look at the advantages.
