Work From Home? You’ll Need a Good Office

It’s easy to assume that working from home means constant pajama days; working from the sofa or your bed all winter or with a drink in the garden when the weather is warm. But it’s not the case, while the occasional day like this is a perk of home working- for the most part, you need to treat it like you would any other job. That means getting up, getting yourself ready and sitting at a desk. There’s something about this that puts you in a productive frame of mind so you’re ready to get down to business.

Keeps your business items in one place

As a home business owner, freelancer, blogger or other home-based career, a home office allows you to keep all of your business items together in one place. This could be stock or materials, it could be your paperwork and filing, it could be equipment relating to what you do. Instead of having these things all over your house, a properly organized home office keeps them together. Everything is where you need it to be so it’s easy to find and just as easy to put away. Spend some time decluttering, if you have items relating to your business that you need to keep (but don’t need right now) consider using a storage facility. If you have items that are no longer useful, donate them or throw them away, keeping the space clear and organized for the things that you do need.

Separates work and home

Working from home is great, for exactly that reason- you get to stay at home! No commute, more flexibility and being surrounded by your own creature comforts are just a few of the reasons it can be beneficial. However, there is a flip side. When your home is your workplace, it’s easy to feel like you’re constantly at work, plus you can easily get distracted. By having a home office, a separate space to work from you help to create a boundary. When you’re in your home office, you know it’s time to work and not time to relax. When you close the door to the office at the end of each day, you know you can ‘switch off.’ No need to be checking emails in bed or writing up reports at the dinner table. This separation between work and life is much needed for most of us who work from home.

It’s good for your health

Spending your days working from the sofa or your bed might seem amazing at first, but it’s not good for your health. A proper seating position at a desk is much better for you, so invest in a good desk and chair that you’re able to sit at for long periods. You need something that’s ergonomically designed and comfortable for your back and neck. Decorate the space to look clean and bright, white walls and wooden floors with a couple of plants dotted around will make for pleasant surroundings to boost your mood too.
