One day, you will tell the story of your company’s success. Perhaps, you will start with how you had a dream to deliver something great and innovative on the market. Then, you might move on to the struggles you encountered trying to make that dream a reality. You might mention the person who believed in you enough and pushed you to continue to strive for your goal. One thing you probably won’t mention is the employees behind your business, working in your company right now. It’s nothing personal. Employers simply never give credit to the workers, and this is, to an extent, fair enough. After all, you want to be seen as the strength of your business, not the employees.

However, it is important that you remember your employees are important. If you’re going to win on the market, you need the strongest group of employees available. They need to be highly skilled, well trained and ready to tackle any and all issues on the market. They need to be the best of the best, and you have to attract them to your company.

There’s a common misconception in business that a job interview is a one-way street. Candidates have to impress employers and wow them to the point where they want to make a hire. However, when you interview a really fantastic candidate, there’s a role reversal. You find yourself trying to impress them instead. Let’s look at some of the basic wants and requirements the best employees look for when they choose a business.

Health And Safety

Believe it or not, this is always going to be one the first factors potential employees take into consideration. Would they feel safe working there? Now you might say, don’t be silly of course, they would. Well, we certainly hope so because there better not be any hazards around on the day of the interview. If there are, you can guarantee, a potential employee will notice. They will spot if your office isn’t tidy or if there are pools of liquid in the hall. Contrary to what lawyers might tell you, no employee is looking to be injured on the job.

Employees might also be looking for proof that you care about their safety. It’s not a bad idea to have something in place that shows their health and stress levels will be monitored. The higher up you are, the more stressful work is. In the position of an executive, you could struggle with stress levels every day and no employee wants that. That’s why if you have a health assessment service set up for your business, you’re more likely to get employees eager to join. They will feel reassured knowing that you take the health of your employee’s seriously.

There is, of course, one other issue with health that you may want to consider. Employees would love to find a job that includes family health insurance within the package. This won’t always be available, particularly for small businesses. But if you can fit it in the budget, it is something worth considering. That brings us to the second concern for employees.

Big Benefits

Don’t get the wrong idea here. Employees aren’t as naive as most business owners think. They would much rather have job security than expensive benefits that can’t be covered in the model. At the same time, though, you do need to remember the best employees might be wooed by other businesses. You don’t want to allow them to slip through your fingers, and there’s an easy way to avoid that. Provide what they need rather than what they might want.

For instance, you might have read about all the crazy employee benefits that companies like Google offer. From unlimited sick days to play areas in the office. But employees don’t need this. What they need is a fair level of pay, a chance to reach never levels in their career and a friendly place to work. If you can provide these three basic benefits, you’re already beating a lot of the other businesses. There are twice as many unhappy employees in the workplace as there are happy ones. If you can create a company that breaks that mold, you’ll win the hearts of the best workers.

Building The Brand

You might have a chance to win over employees long before they actually interview. You’ll get this chance if you can build up the brand image of your business. When applying for a job these days, most employees will search the company on social sites such as LinkedIn. It is here that you will be able to build up the brand of your business. Make it look like a modern, friendly, inclusive place to work. Ensure that you provide a window into the workings of your company and entice the best candidates to apply. Even at this point, you should be selling your business like it is exactly what they need and want. They should know, when they look at your profile, your company is where they want to be.

In this way, marketing isn’t just about attracting the customer. You need to use it to attract the employee as well.

Interest Different People

The world has changed. Before 2000, almost all of your workers probably grew up just a few miles from the factory or office. Now, you can recruit from absolutely anywhere and you should. You should take the opportunity to gain fresh eyes and a new perspective on your business. Make sure that your business is appealing to different social groups and beliefs to get the most from your business. Research shows that diverse companies perform forty percent more effectively. If you attract different types of people, you’ll have the employees you need to evolve and expand.

Take this advice on board and you will attract the employees who can guarantee that success story. They may not be recognized, but they will be fundamental to whether or not your business becomes the champion that you already know it can be.
