Three Reasons Why I’m Not Weighing In On The Atrocious Paula Deen PR
By Alex Greenwood
I’m not really all that big on piling on or kicking someone when they’re down, even if I find their actions (in the kitchen and out) vile and repulsive.
Paula Deen and her atrocious PR Team have been all over the news lately (sheesh, you’d think she’s as important as the soon-to-be-born offspring of a foreign, anachronistic institution or something), and everyone and their dog have an opinion on it.
Of course, I have opinions about the situation, both personally and as a public relations and crisis communications professional. However, I just don’t think I’ll add to the conversation too much on this one.
Why? Three reasons:
- My opinions are in general no different than most of those in my profession. She has terrible PR advice, or chose to ignore some good advice. That’s obvious.
- I find her food unhealthy and unappealing to think about. Maybe this brouhaha will make people think twice about her recipes and food lifestyle. I agree on that score with Anthony Bourdain:
“The worst, most dangerous person to America is clearly Paula Deen. She revels in unholy connections with evil corporations and she’s proud of the fact that her food is f—ing bad for you. If I were on at seven at night and loved by millions of people at every age, I would think twice before telling an already obese nation that it’s OK to eat food that is killing us. Plus, her food sucks.”
- Her stated comments regarding race are insensitive and ignorant at best, nasty and worthy of censure at worst. The excuse that “it’s how she was raised” doesn’t cut it, by the way. Nothing more to say about that.
Also, why give this person any more attention? Ugh.
What do you think? The comments section awaits.
