Gifts, Turkeys, Chili Dogs, Chiefs and Fortunes of Business

This and That for the Last Week of November 2012

My monthly ramble…(With apologies to Larry King)

It was written on the wind...

So, another November flies by, and the silly season is upon us…I’ve given up on the Chiefs (they had such promise in the preseason!), as much as it pains me. It’s interesting to watch the poor PR moves made by the team management…as the saying goes, when you’re stuck in a hole, stop diggin’, but maybe they need to dig a tad deeper before they can climb out, dust themselves off, get rid of the problems, recruit new talent and start over. Easier said than done, eh? Maybe Geno Smith?

Anyway…My OU Sooners had a rather lackluster year. Not bad, just not up to the standards we’ve come to expect. Bill Snyder and K-State should be congratulated–they had the season OU should’ve had…I enjoyed a nice Thanksgiving with my family in Oklahoma…didn’t see everybody, but I’ve learned that as we get older, siblings (and old friends) have their own children and (yikes) grandchildren, and sharing a childhood doesn’t always translate to adult compatibility…but there is still love there…

I can’t believe I put out three books this year. Two mystery novels and one top-selling non-fiction ebook. Phew! I need a rest, but probably won’t get one. I have a book signing Saturday for my latest mystery (Pilate’s Ghost), then I’ll do some more promo throughout the holidays. After that it’s back to writing. I’m editing a client’s book and rewriting one of my first manuscripts from way back when. It may not ever be published, but I want to revisit the writer I was as a young man, if only for laughs and perhaps even some genuine surprises…

Speaking of writing and clients, we’re working to help a new client roll out her latest book. Stay tuned for more on a great book by a funny lady…One of our national clients has announced some cutbacks, and we may not be working as closely with them as we’d like in the near future, but that’s life in the world of commerce: where one door closes, there’s a window opening somewhere (or something like that)…

Sure, I love turkey, but I dearly love the Chili Dog, and the day after Thanksgiving a pal treated me to some fine grilled dogs, beer and strangely enough, a glass of port…it worked…

Been catching up on podcasts lately. Some fun stuff out there, like low-wattage homegrown radio — light on substance but amusing all the same. Do you have an obscure podcast you listen to? Let’s hear about it in the comments section…

…Black Friday crept into Thanksgiving. Disgraceful…which leads us to…Christmas. Well, I have nothing to say about that now except my 4-year-old daughter will welcome back herĀ Elf on the Shelf on Dec. 1–she calls him Eli. A sweet holiday tradition. Wish I had thought of it!

The Public Relations biz rolls right along, and I’m excited to welcome the PRConsultants Group annual conference to Kansas City Jan. 23-25, 2013. If you want to sponsor and get your product, service or company in front of PR pros from all over the nation, contact me today…

…and that’s all the rambling I can afford for this month. Catch you next time…–Alex
