Nebraska-Based Mystery Series Continues

Author of Peru State College-inspired Series Will Sign Books in Omaha April 9

alexgreenwood_pilatesblood_web_finalPeru, Nebraska has many claims to fame: the oldest college in the state with a beautiful arboretum campus–and sadly one of the first college shootings in modern American history. When Alex Greenwood worked there in the mid-2000s, Peru’s rich history and bucolic setting sparked his imagination, leading to four novels inspired by the tiny southeast Nebraska town.

“Working at Peru State was such an interesting time for me,” said Greenwood, now owner of a public relations firm in Kansas City. “I was the proverbial fish out of water. I had moved from a relatively large metro area–Oklahoma City–to a tiny town with a college that was in the midst of something of a rebirth. I can honestly say it changed me.”

Greenwood will sign books in the series, including the latest, Pilate’s Blood at The Bookworm 2501 S. 90th Street, Suite 111 Omaha, Nebraska 68124 402-392-2877) on April 9 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Greenwood was marketing director at Peru State 2003-2005, working in the successful–yet later scandal-plagued–Ben Johnson administration. At the time of his death, Johnson was retired but under investigation for embezzlement.

“Dr. Johnson was one of the most brilliant, creative and driven men I’ve ever known,” Greenwood said. “He was mercurial, to say the least, and I was saddened when word of some ethical lapses surfaced after his retirement. That said it was a tragedy, considering all the good things he did for Peru State.”

Though inspired by his time as a fish out of water in Peru, Greenwood’s John Pilate Mystery Series (Pilate’s Cross, Pilate’s Key, Pilate’s Ghost and the just-released Pilate’s Blood) is a mystery series that focuses on the reluctant sleuth John Pilate, an outsider who tries to make sense of an odd cast of characters in the fictional Cross Township, home of Cross College.

“There’s nothing in the series about actual people I know in Peru, but I’m told by local readers that I’ve captured that certain southeast Nebraska vibe,” Greenwood said. “I think maybe if that vibe is mixed with a little hint of Justified and Twin Peaks.”

coversBook one in the John Pilate Mystery Series, Pilate’s Cross, was published in 2010. It was nominated for several Global Ebook Awards and was recognized as a Notable book by Shelf Unbound Magazine.  It was re-released as an audiobook in 2013.

Pilate’s Key and Pilate’s Ghost were released in 2012. Key was named semi-finalist for Best Mystery/Thriller in the Kindle Book Review Awards. Both books were named “Pageturners” by Shelf Unbound Magazine.

The latest book, Pilate’s Blood joins reluctant hero John Pilate (and a snarky doppelgänger called Simon) a few weeks after the events of book three, Pilate’s Ghost.

The good news: Pilate’s book about his previous near-fatal experiences at Cross College is a bestseller. The bad news: his publisher just absconded with all the proceeds.

Once a hero, now Pilate is broke, bored and forced to take a job imbued with a little more authority than a dogcatcher but far less respect. What’s worse, there’s criminality afoot and nobody to deal with it but Pilate. Sure, things could work out just fine…then again, it may come down to spilling Pilate’s Blood…Thicker Than Water, Twice As Deadly.

Besides The Bookworm, Pilate’s Blood and other books in the series are available as a paperback and an ebook on Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com and Lulu. The ebook may be found in iBookstore, KOBO and wherever eBooks are sold. For more information, visit PilatesCross.com.
