As a startup business, it is likely that you will begin the process on your own. This has lots of perks such as choosing your working hours, having full control of the direction of the business and only yourself to watch out for. However, if you want to build your business further, you will need to hire employees.

Hiring staff is a huge step, and it’s a really exciting process. But before you jump in, a few things to think about first.

How will you pay them?

Before you do anything, you need to think about how you are going to pay a new employee and what the salary will be. This is crucial for your business because it is important that you can continue payments and that the salary you offer will attract talent.

While you were on your own, it’s unlikely that you needed any business accounting software, but with an employee, you might like to consider it. You should also decide whether you want to use electronic payments or give your employee a check each month. How Will Processes Expand?

There are so many processes that you probably already have in place in your business that you will need to think about in some detail if you can expand your business from one to many easily enough. These processes deserve a lot of thought and careful attention to ensure that you are not causing any trouble for your businesses now or in the future.

Something like the process of procuring from your suppliers can get so much more complicated if you are not careful, so you’ll have to think about using a service designed to help you have a more centralized procurement process. That is an example of the kind of solution that will likely become really important as you expand.

Who should you hire?

Choosing the right employee is crucial to your joint success. As you have been working alone up to now, you need to find someone who will complement your skill set and bring something new to the table. But, you also need to make sure that you are going to get on well together and form a good team.

You should read up on some interviewing tips to make sure that you are asking the right questions and presenting yourself in the right way too. If you have interviewing experience from previous jobs, this will help, but remember that in this situation, you are completely in control of the direction you want to go in.

One of the best perks of working alone is that you can choose when you work and where you work. But, when you hire an employee, you will need to set some ground rules for when your work and where you work. You can still work from a home office if there is space and you are comfortable with inviting an employee to your home every day, but it might be better to rent an office space.

There are all sorts of options for cheap office space and shared or coworking spaces are a popular choice for new businesses. You could also look into incubators and accelerators which will help you to find funding and may help to refine business ideas too.  

Though it can be scary to bring someone else into a business that you have had sole control over for so long, it is also an incredible opportunity to diversify your ideas and look into new directions as well. And once you have made your first hire, further employees can’t be too far behind.
