Crazy Ways You Can Obliterate Your Own PR

As a PR coach, I’ve seen quite a few public relations disasters. If you are an entrepreneur or a business owner, PR is important. It’s the difference between owning a respected company that everyone knows and running a business that no one has heard of. If you want your company or your business ventures to be successful, you need fantastic PR. Unfortunately, though, there are various ways that PR can go catastrophically wrong.

Rubbing The Press The Wrong Way

The press and the media, in general, are your greatest allies, but they can also be your most powerful enemies. If you annoy your media connections, they can make things tough on you when it comes to getting the word out about your brand. The best advice here is to always treat journalists with respect and consideration–and make sure the story you are sharing with them is newsworthy. Show up on time for meetings and don’t try to write the story for them. Instead, provide them with the information through fact sheets, releases and videos. Then let them write the story they choose to.

No Updates, No New Info

It is possible to run your own PR campaign without a pro like myself. I’ve seen a lot of busy business owners do this. But, you need to be aware of how much time public relations activities will take out of your day. If you’re not spending at least a few hours each day boosting the image of your business, you’re not putting enough work into PR. This will show by the lack of power behind your brand.

Showing People The Wrong Side

Lastly, there are always two sides of a business professional. The person in private is not the same as the individual in the spotlight. Authenticity is important, but you shouldn’t necessarily let clients see all of who you are outside of the office. That’s why you need to keep tight control of your social media profiles and utilize privacy settings. The infographic below has some great advice on how to use social media effectively while still keeping your privacy.
