3 Simple Ways To Develop A Strong Relationship With Your Staff Team

Partnered Content.

Do you remember all those years ago when you were the employee rather than the employer? There may have been times when you were seething because of the way your boss spoke to you, you may have felt underappreciated, and you could have become so fed up that you searched for another role altogether. Now that you’re the employer, you see both sides of the coin. On the one hand, you are run off your feet, you have a mountain of priorities, and you know that you probably don’t show your staff how valued they are. On the other hand, you don’t want to be losing excellent employees simply because of your inability to create a happy and productive atmosphere in which to work. Take a look at these simple ways to develop a healthy and strong relationship with your staff.

Communication

The key to any relationship is communication. While your team doesn’t need to know profit margins, financial forecasting or the intricacies of the upcoming year’s marketing campaign, you should be celebrating company successes with them. A simple weekly email to keep them in the loop will develop greater levels of engagement. Show your employees that they are appreciated by name-checking those individuals who have achieved something particularly exceptional that week. Someone may have secured a lucrative contract or implemented an efficiency saving. Whatever it is, shout about it and let your whole team know.

Away Days

It’s vital that you get to know your employees on a personal level. While you need to maintain a professional relationship and you don’t want to be their best friend and socialize with them, it’s ok to inquire once in a while to see how their kids are getting on at school. It’s important that you know your staff by name and that you can create some time away from the office to take part in team building and morale-boosting activities. This can be fun and allow you to see new skills in your team. Those that may be quieter in the office may hold their own when trying to build a raft to cross a river. Time away from the office can be healthy and foster a more productive ethos within your team.

The Basics

If you can pay above market rate, do so. This not only shows your team that you value their work but it will also attract the best and brightest talent. Go the extra mile for your employees. If they are looking to buy a house, supply their potential mortgage provider with a reference, create fake check stubs to demonstrate their proof of income and allow them a day off for moving. Being flexible is key to ensuring you receive the same in return. If you require your team to work overtime on a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon because of a deadline, they’ll be more inclined to help out and go the extra mile if you will do the same for them.

Being a boss can be a difficult juggling act. However, don’t neglect the importance of your staff team. These are the individuals that will help you implement your business vision and aid in your quest to make your startup dream a money-making reality.
